TrailO

There will be two Trail Orienteering (TrailO) events: TempO on Day 1 (Fri 19 Apr) and PreO on Day 2 (Sat 20 Apr).  Both will be within walking distance of the Foot Orienteering event centres. Closer car parking will be available for Paralympic competitors on application.

The JK19 TrailO will also be the first British events ever to be part of the European Cup in Trail Orienteering (ECTO).  For 2019 the ECTO events are:

6-17 March

Slovenia

TempO + PreO.

19-20 April

Great Britain JK19

TempO & PreO.

22-23 June

Portugal

TempO + PreO

14-15 September

Poland

TempO + PreO

5-6 October

Sweden

Night PreO + 2 x PreO

At both events Elite and Standard courses will be provided, with different entry fees.  Either course may be entered by any-one, regardless of age.  The Elite courses will be planned for ECTO competitors and will be British TrailO Ranking Events.  The Standard courses will be planned to a more introductory technical standard and will be shorter (time and distance); they are recommended for less experienced TrailO competitors.  Prizes (Open, Junior and Para) will only be awarded on the Elite courses.

The timings of both TrailO events will enable competitors to participate in both FootO and TrailO competitions.  Those entering just the TrailO will be allocated Start Times so as to prevent excessive waiting/ queuing at the start.

TempO Area and Courses:

St Omer Village, Aldershot Garrison.  Previously only used for Qualification Heats for British Sprint Orienteering Championships 2015.  Routegadget.

The Standard course will use the same stations and kites as the Elite course, but with fewer and simpler tasks.

PreO Area and Courses:

Frith Hill, Deepcut.  Frequently used for FootO at 1:10,000, e.g. 2016/17.

The Standard course will use the same map as the Elite course, but with fewer and simpler controls.  There will only be PreO “Zero” answers where the choice is between one kite (“A”) or none (“Z”).

TrailO Explanation:

The full explanation of Trail-O is at https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/site/trailo.

TempO

Temp-O is the sprint version of Trail-O, consisting of timed controls throughout. Each person is called individually to a Control Station and is seated – or if in a wheelchair, placed at the same spot – with a view out over terrain with usually 6 orienteering kites visible. The 6 kites, labelled “A” / “Alpha” through to “F” / “Foxtrot” from left to right, are pointed out by the Station Official, and then a pack of small map extracts is handed out, each aligned in the direction of view and showing one control circle. Initially a cover sheet hides the first map from view. Once the Station Official says ”Your time starts now”, the cover sheet can be removed and the first map studied. The centre of the control circle is a distinct feature in the terrain – the Task is to decide if there is a kite there or not, and if there is, which one is it of the six in view.  If none of the kites corresponds exactly with the control circle and description, the answer is “Zero” / “Z”.  Answers are given verbally, using the Phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Zero), or by pointing to the correct letter on a board. Results are based on the time taken at each Station to answer all Tasks, plus a 30 seconds penalty for every wrong answer.

Standard Senior (M/W21+),

Standard Junior (M/W20-)

PreO

PreO significantly reduces the element of speed over the ground, but makes the map interpretation element much harder. Depending on the level of difficulty, up to five orienteering kites (“A” to “E”, from left to right) are hung at each site and only one may correspond exactly with the control description and control circle position. Indeed one possible answer is 'None of the kites is correct' so this is a “Z” answer.  Answers are recorded on a paper control card.  In addition, there will be one or two Timed Control Stations, with two to three Tasks each.  These are similar to TempO, but with no “Z” answers, and a 60 second penalty for wrong answers.  The competition results are based on the number of PreO Controls answered correctly within the total time allowed to complete the course.  Those with equal correct answers are then separated by their time taken & penalties on the Timed Controls.
